Four Decades of Sculpture by Canadian Inuit
Published in conjunction with the Marion Scott Gallery's celebration
of its 20th anniversary in 1995, this fully illustrated catalogue
provides an excellent overview of some of the best sculpture from
the North. John Tiktak, John Kavik, Lucy Tasseor, Charlie Ugyuk,
Barnabas Arnasungaaq and Luke Iksiktaaryuk are just some of the
artists represented. Grouped by community, each section of sculpture
is preceded by a brief discussion of the stylistic traits specific
to that region.
In an introductory essay, curator Norman Zepp vigorously defends
the notion of artistic quality, arguing that aesthetic engagement
with the work of northerners deepens rather than obscures its cultural
meaning.
