| Now located on Water Street
in Vancouver's heritage Gastown district, the Marion
Scott Gallery has been exposing West Coast audiences
to fine Inuit art from Canada’s North for three
decades. As dealers committed to presenting the very
best of northern art, both contemporary and older, the
Gallery has been a driving force in the development
of a stable, mature market for Inuit art.
Founded in 1975 by the late Marion Scott, who organized
the first major exhibition of Inuit sculpture on the
West Coast in 1966, the Gallery is now run by Judy Scott
Kardosh, Marion’s daughter and Director since
1989. Producing on average two major, fully curated
exhibitions per year, the Gallery has been successful
in raising awareness about northern art and artists,
both in Vancouver as well as nationally and internationally.
Between exhibitions, the Gallery maintains a display
of high quality Inuit sculpture, prints, drawings and
wallhangings, ensuring an ongoing presence for Inuit
art in the cultural life of Canada’s third largest
city. The Marion Scott Gallery will also be mounting
exhibitions of contemporary art by southern Canadian
artists.
Under the curatorial co-direction of Robert Kardosh, a third-generation
family member, the Marion Scott Gallery has become an established
leader in the publication of exhibition-related catalogues and books
on northern art. Aimed equally at collectors, scholars and the general
public, the Gallery’s small but growing list of fine art publications
is filling a vital need by helping to further develop the body of
critical writing on Inuit art and artists.
Marion Scott Gallery offers professional appraisal services for
all types of Inuit art, and is a recognized appraiser by the Canadian
Cultural Properties Review Board. The Gallery will also purchase
or take consignment of collections of fine Inuit art.
