Cape Dorset sculptor Oviloo Tunnillie is widely
considered to be one of the foremost artists of her generation.
An unconventional Inuit artist who first came to national and
international prominence in the 1990s, Tunnillie is best known
for her distinctive stone images of women lost in grief or private
contemplation. Though usually generalized, her works are also
often strongly autobiographical in nature, reflecting contemporary
northern reality as opposed to a mythical and traditional past.
Published
to accompany a major 2008 exhibition of the artist's work at
Marion Scott Gallery, this engaging 12-page monograph features
essays by curator Robert Kardosh and director Judy Kardosh. Includes
beautiful illustrations of 8 of the sculptures from the show.
