FOUR WORKS
ON PAPER by
Baker Lake's Tony Anguhalluq have been chosen for inclusion in the
13th Biennial of Naive and Marginal Art, to be held in October 2007
in Jagodina, Serbia. The exhibition will mark the first time that Anguhalluq's
work will have been exhibited outside Canada, and the first time
that an Inuit artist will have been included in the European biennial.
Anguhalluq's inclusion in this prestigious curated exhibition follows
his immensely successful solo show at the Marion Scott Gallery in April
of this year. Stay tuned for another exhibition of Anguhalluq's striking
landscape drawings, coming this winter to MSG. Congratulations, Tony! |

THIS FALL MSG PRESENTS its
long awaited mid-career retrospective of drawings by Shuvinai Ashoona.
Ever since she began making drawings for the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative
in the early 1990s, Ashoona has continuously challenged the art world
with her unconventional and frequently psychologically-charged images.
This landmark exhibition will trace the Cape Dorset artist's evolution
through a range of styles and themes, and will include examples of her
early atmospheric landscapes along with her more recent experimentations
with collage-like composition. A 12-page illustrated brochure-essay will
accompany the retrospective. All works in the exhibition will be viewable online at www.marionscottgallery.com after October 5. A special reception will be given in Ashoona's honour at the Marion Scott Gallery on Friday, October 12, 7-9pm. Click here to RSVP. |

PUBLISHED TO ACCOMPANY a 2007
exhibition of Annie Pootoogook's work at the Illingworth Kerr
Gallery in Calgary, Alberta, this richly illustrated large-format publication
includes several large colour reproductions of the artist's
unconventional drawings of contemporary northern life. The modest number
of pages notwithstanding, the catalogue contains three timely essays,
including one by art historian Deborah Root entitled "Inuit
art and the Limits of Authenticity" and another by contemporary art
curator Nancy Campbell. Pootoogook has recently had a string of major successes. In 2006, the Cape Dorset drawer was the first Inuit artist in history to win the prestigious Sobey Award for most promising Canadian artist under the age of 40; and in 2007 her work was exhibited at Documenta in Hassel, Germany. 37 colour reproductions, 2 black-and white photographs, 36 pages, hardback.
